Compound CP7 is a Human Leukocyte Elastase/Protease Inhibitor, a synthetic tetra peptide carbamate. Theoretically, it may be preventing White Blood Cells from reaching the inflamed tissue and prevents those that do reach from releasing destructive enzymes, such as proteases. Normally the WBCs destroy inflamed tissue and is replaced with a scar, collagen. Elastin is normally destroyed during the process of inflammation and healing. In 1988 experiments were performed on rabbit corneas. The corneas were thermally or chemically burned and one eye was treated with the drug and the other with saline. The treated eyes developed less scarring or neovascularization in comparison to the control eyes. This was repeated by a histo-ophthalmologist, at a European university. The corneas were bathed in 1N alkaline solution; resulting in severe keratitis and complete opacification of the corneas. A few days later heavy neovascularization developed. Treated eyes did not perforate, and two weeks later the cornea started to clear, beginning at the periphery. Also neovascularization was much less in the treated eyes. In another experiment the eye was bathed for 30 seconds, followed by saline solution treatment for 30 days. After instilling CP7 for 17 days the scar shrank by 75%.
The compound was injected into the vitreous of rabbit eyes. Follow up slit lamp/fundus exam, taped on video, showed no signs of inflammation and/or vitreous opacification. Pathology showed no signs of toxicity to the intraocular tissues. Sixty dogs with paraplegia were able to walk after 2-4 weeks of treatment. Another dog with paralysis of the four limbs started running in less than 4 weeks of treatment. This is documented on video. No systemic or local side effects after more than a year of treatment.
